Maple Backup only ever accesses the backup files it creates
Each provider uses its own narrowest available permission — Google's drive.file scope or Dropbox's dedicated App Folder access — so Maple Backup can never browse, read, or modify anything else already in your account.

Why only Google Drive and Dropbox from the Chrome Web Store?
This is a real limit of how Chrome itself works, not a choice we made. Google Drive is connected using Chrome's own built-in Google sign-in (chrome.identity.getAuthToken) — Chrome only allows this API to succeed for a copy of the extension installed through the official Chrome Web Store, no matter what the extension's own code does. Dropbox uses a more generic sign-in flow, but the "callback address" its server checks is tied to the extension ID. This site offers Dropbox through the Chrome Web Store build.
Because of this, Maple Backup only shows the Connect buttons for these two providers when it detects it's genuinely running as the Chrome Web Store copy — showing them anywhere else would just lead to a guaranteed failure.
For every other copy of the extension — one loaded directly from source rather than through the Chrome Web Store — Maple Backup instead offers Nutstore (坚果云) and Koofr. Both are WebDAV-based cloud storage services authenticated with a personal "app password" you generate yourself, rather than a Google-style sign-in — so neither one depends on the Chrome Web Store at all, and both work identically no matter how the extension was installed.
This matters because Google and Dropbox's own servers are themselves unreachable in some parts of the world — mainland China being the clearest example. An install that only ever offered those two would be useless there. Nutstore specifically is a mainland-China-based service, included for exactly that reason. We don't yet publish a direct download of the non-Store copy on this site — that's planned for later.
